a “statement” coat or statement anything references a product with characteristics that most would consider a bit more distinctive or bold.
The statement coat is by no chance an essential in any menswear wardrobe but for those of us who have already secured the fundamentals like the navy and camel coat, a statement coat you can pull out every now and then naturally follows.
There are several reasons:
You don’t want to feel like you’re in a style rut
You want to highlight your own individuality.
You want a well rounded wardrobe allowing for an option to be a bit more spontaneous when you want to me.
I relate to all of these reasons.
For those wondering, in menswear, a “statement” coat or statement anything references a product with characteristics that most would consider a bit more distinctive or bold. In the case of the statement coat, it could be in the texture of its fabric, color, pattern or silhouette.
The piece I am wearing is a funnel houndstooth single breasted coat from French Connection. I’ve owned it for a few years now and it’s one that is quite easy to both elevate and dress down if needed.
If you own one of these statement coats or something similar and you’re wondering how to style, here are my top tips.
Keep the supporting pieces as clean as possible to keep focus on the statement. I’ve paired the coat with a turtleneck from Suit Supply, Bottega Veneta trousers, Ferragamo’s Gianci belt, and a casual pair of white BOSS sneakers. If you’re not a sneaker guy, a black brogue would make for a great option.
Keep the colors of the supporting pieces aligned with the color wheel of the coat. As you can see, my entire look pays tribute to the concept. The white sneaker is such a neutral, it pairs well with almost any casual or semi-casual look without distracting. I have a preference for clean leather and design, and this one by BOSS is one of my favorites.
For a styling formula with such a clean aesthetic, it is important that it doesn’t feel or fall flat to the eyes. Breaking up the pieces with accessories like a simple Leather strapped wrist watch and a belt makes for a great decision. I’m wearing Carl F. Bucherer’s #ManeroAutoDate and Ferragamo’s reversible and adjustable Gancini belt.
