The Proactiv Shave Club: The Proper Way to Shave

If you're like most men, having acne or razor bumps are good reasons to never pick up a razor again. In fact, some dermatologists will tell you that the only way to treat razor bumps is to stop shaving. But for most men, that's unachievable, unless you're preparing to audition for Duck Dynasty. If you know the tricks of the shaving trade, not only will you avoid razor bumps, but you can also fight acne as you shave. Whether you have acne or razor bumps, you can minimize them both by taking these precautions and following these shaving tips recommended by the Proactiv Shave Club, which is now featuring Gillette’s Fusion ProShield razors.

Before You Shave…

Soak and Steam

I think the best place to shave is in the shower. Get a fog-resistant mirror and give it a try. If shaving in the shower is out of the question, always shave after showering, not before.

Get Rid of Bacteria

To kill acne-causing bacteria, the Proactiv Shave Club and the folks at Gillette recommend a generous application of their alcohol-free, non-foaming Soothing Shave Gel. It's formulated with benzoyl peroxide that starts killing p. acnes bacteria on contact.

While You Shave…

Use the Right Razor

Gillette is a well-known name in the world of men’s grooming, known for their high-quality blades. The Gillette Fusion Proshield razor features FlexBall™ technology and an ergonomic grip, designed to help you miss less hairs.

Shave With the Grain

Pull the razor in the direction your hair is growing or at a 90-degree angle. This usually means shaving down instead of up. Going against the grain increases the possibility of nicks and opening breakouts. Also, don't stretch the skin as you shave -- a common mistake many men make.

After You Shave…

Rinse Your Face and the Razor

Rinse your face with cool or even cold water if you can take it. Then rinse the shaving head in rubbing alcohol to eliminate bacteria.

Tone and Moisturize

Products like toners and non-pore-clogging moisturizers are designed to calm skin and clear dead skin cells and other pore-clogging debris. For that reason, toners and moisturizers make great aftershaves.

And Of Course…

Always use a very sharp razor

This is the shaving commandment most often broken by men. And no wonder! The cost of men's shaving blades is often expensive so we try to stretch out the life of that poor blade as long as we can!

Members of the Proactiv Shave Club featuring Gillette ProShield, save money on blades and fight acne as they shave. That's because every month, in addition to a supply of multi-blade replacement cartridges, members get the dermatologist-tested Proactiv Soothing Shave Gel.

Perfect for maintaining bump- and stubble-free skin, this gel adds blemish-clearing power to your morning routine with micro-crystal benzoyl peroxide. In addition, a special moisturizing complex helps keep your skin smooth, soft and hydrated.
