Santorini is a place of dreams. This gorgeous group of islands rise up from the Aegean like precious gems, dazzling in their beauty. To visitors, the three main islands of Santorini, Thira, Thirassiá, and Asproníssi, are the most romantic destinations in the world. The turquoise waters surrounding the islands are wonderfully clear, and the multi-coloured beaches make it the perfect place to soak up the Mediterranean sun.

Not surprisingly, every year, millions of visitors pack up their wheeled suitcases, to head for the sun in Santorini. Once there, you can enjoy the majestic scenery, learn more about the islands’ volcanic heritage, and take advantage of some delicious food, and wine.

Life in the Greek Islands is fairly low-key. Most locals do their chores early in the morning when the sun is less fierce, and then rest during the middle of the day when only mad dogs and Englishmen are out and about. Once the sun goes down and the temperatures cool off, the locals (and tourists) come out to play.

So, if you're one of those people planning a summer trip to Santorini, here's what you should know, and take with you:

Beachwear

During the summer months, the islands will be very hot, but over winter, the temperatures drop to a more pleasant level and it can even be chilly at times. Top of your packing list for a summer holiday should always be swimwear. You can’t visit Santorini without taking a dip in the clear waters of the Aegean. It would be unthinkable! For the beach, pack swim shorts, and a beach towel, plus a hat to keep the sun off your face. Take casual shorts, and t-shirts to wear over your swim trunks when traveling to, and from the beach in case you fancy a drink at a local beachside bar, and can’t be bothered to get dressed again.

Shopping & Sightseeing

For shopping, and sight-seeing expeditions, a polo shirt is ideal for hot days.

Hiking

Much of the islands are mountainous, and there are many hiking trails to explore. You won’t be able to do much walking without decent footwear, so make sure you take a pair of trainers, along with some socks to protect your hot feet from blisters. Be sure to wear your hat to protect your head from the worst of the sun.

Nightlife

Nightlife in Santorini is great, and there are some fantastic bars and restaurants. Pack a couple of popover shirts, and trousers, along with some loafers.

Lastly, don’t forget to pack some insect repellent for you and your bedroom. The mosquitoes love to come out at night, so without some effective repellent, you will be eaten alive.
