The black turtleneck is a darling menswear piece and wearing one in cashmere is one of my greatest fall/winter dressing pleasures.
Aside from its functional abiliTY of being able to make the double chin disappear while also keeping the neck and below warm during the colder season, another notable advantage is its versatility.
Versatility reigns supreme when it comes to maximizing knitwear to its full capacity and the black turtleneck pairs very well with almost anything; as a layering piece, focus piece or supporting piece. It also makes for a more relaxed alternative to the shirt and tie.
We’ve seen all of its various stylings through formalwear and casualwear throughout the years because of its cozy and figure hugging nature.
That being said, here’s one way I have been wearing it this season.
1. Contrasting Colors
When I wear turtlenecks in general, I prefer pairing it directly with other items that contrast in color. Whether it’s a jacket or trouser. I’ve exemplified the idea in the featured look by pairing the black turtleneck with a brown wide legged trouser.
While I do enjoy the choice of a monochrome option, the addition of other colors even when they’re more muted feels a bit more dynamic. On the basis of allowing each item in THE ensemble to shine on its own, this is one way to do it.
2. Accessorizing with A Belt And A Wrist Watch
If you’re someone like me who enjoys a semi casual element to an otherwise fully casual look, including a belt is one way to do that on a tucked in style formula. Functionality sees that the turtleneck doesn’t get bunched up at the waist, allowing for a silhouette that is neater than the reverse option. I prefer neatly designed leather options that match my turtleneck in color like this Reversible and adjustable Gancini belt by Ferragamo. It’s just the right amount of detail with no flamboyant distractions.
In the spirit of keeping things a bit more subdued, I will oftentimes opt for a watch that simplistically blends in with the color wheel of the turtleneck. It’s discreet yet sharp and noticeable when looked at closely.
3. Wide Legged Trousers
I’ve always loved the way tailored trousers feel when I wear them. In the right fabric they can feel soft and snug. With the wide legged trousers, there’s more fabric and more room for movement or any athletic advancements. It feels a bit more free. Also, the way its silhouette rests perfectly on top of a sneaker or boot is oddly satisfying to experience visually.
4. White Sneakers
During the colder season, there’s nothing better than a smooth white leather sneaker for a casual footwear option. I typically enjoy a sleek silhouette reminiscent of a tennis/designer sneaker. Lightweight and modern.
