Styling the ideal monochromatic outfit involves subtle variations in texture, silhouette and color tone.

Styling matching colors can be tricky. On one hand, it seems easy because it’s straightforward. On the other hand, if done improperly, it can lack individuality and creativity. Styling the ideal monochromatic outfit involves subtle variations in texture, silhouette and color tone. Playing to the notion, I’m featuring suede loafers, pleated wool trousers and a patterned jacquard shirt in a silk blend.
If styling a monochrome outfit is a new concept for you, I suggest starting with simpler neutrals like shades of white, and navy. If you’re looking for a bit more of a progression, brown is a safe choice to consider. Consider starting with lighter tones at the top and then transitioning into darker tones to conclude the bottom half.
ON TEXTURE
ON Silhouette
When it comes to texture, I like to emphasize one to two pieces in my look. One for the top half (waist up), and one for the bottom half (waist down). I typically go for subtle detail like the jacquard pattern on the shirt or the suede loafers which may or may not go unnoticed.
The idea is that whatever detailed texture that is being introduced does not overwhelm the rest of the items playing into the look. A notable mention in playing to this kind of preferred simplicity also includes accessorizing. I’ve kept things simple with this double bar cuff bracelet from V. Bellan.
With silhouettes and monochrome dressing, it is important to commit to the aesthetic style. I prefer to style outfits around a particular detail piece.
The jacquard patterned shirt read as ‘loungy’ to me because of its looser fit, so I decided to commit to a head to toe look that felt more relaxed yet put together. The pleated trousers were perfect. They have a clean, well tailored shape but in a loose/wider fit.
